(PTI Photo)Bengaluru-Kamakhya Express Train Accident News Highlights: After 11 coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Superfast Express derailed in Odisha’s Cuttack killing one and injuring several others on Sunday, the Railways announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for kin of the deceased. Those grievously injured will receive an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh while those with minor injuries will get compensation of Rs 50,000. The deceased was from Alipurduar in West Bengal, and several other injured were admitted to the SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack for treatment. The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) is set to hold a detailed inquiry into the incident.
What happened? The train was heading to Kamakhya station in Assam’s Guwahati from Bengaluru and the accident happened on the down line of the all-important Howrah-Chennai route, disrupting railway services, officials told PTI. Rescue operation has been completed, according to an Odisha Fire Service official. Efforts are being made to clear the accident site at the earliest, the officials added.

Trains diverted, helpline set up: Following the incident, 21 down line trains were diverted, including Dhauli Express, Neelachal Express and Purulia Express, and a special train commenced its journey to Kamakhya with the stranded passengers from the derailment site, news agency PTI reported. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who reviewed the situation, promised best medical treatment for those injured and said the state government will cover their healthcare expenses. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said two persons from his state were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment.
