Man feigns connection to minister to get work done, booked for impersonation

A 52-year-old man who attended a police – citizens programme, was booked on Tuesday for faking proximity to a Union Minister’s Personal Assistant (PA) and attempting to pressure the police into taking quicker action on his complaint.
An officer said that every Tuesday, the Mumbai Police Commissioner meets citizens who can appear without appointment and help resolve their grievances at the new administrative building at the Mumbai Police headquarters.
This Tuesday, a man identified as Dhirajkumar Vyas (52) came to the meeting to complain about economic fraud.
During the meeting he claimed to be close to a Union Minister and said the minister’s personal assistant had directed a quick probe in the matter. He also showed purported whatsapp chats between him and the assistant.
Suspecting something amiss, the police conducted some background checks and found that no such person by the name given by Vyas worked for the minister.
Vyas was then taken aside and during verification police realised that he had no connection to any minister and was making claims to get his work done faster.
The police then registered a case against Vyas on charges of impersonation, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. As per court guidelines, he was issued a notice and allowed to go while the case was transferred to the crime branch.
“We want to check if he used a similar ploy in the past as well to get work done. We will record his detailed statement in the matter and conduct further probe,” an official said.
