One teacher was accused of carrying illegal weapons to class, and another of setting up their bed in the classroom. They were among hundreds of teachers from schools across Bihar against whom students, guardians and others have complained in the past three months to officials conducting school inspections.
The Bihar Education Department has suspended or initiated departmental inquiries against over 100 teachers on the basis of complaints received during routine inspections, which block and district Education officers and other officials are tasked with carrying out regularly in government schools in Bihar.
A senior Education Department official told The Indian Express: “In one instance, we received complaints against some teachers for showing obscene videos or explicit images. In two instances, we have received complaints of teachers converting classrooms into bedrooms. We have also taken cognisance of teachers chewing gutkha in classrooms and putting their feet on desks while sitting on chairs.”

The official also said there was an instance where disciplinary action was initiated against a primary school teacher at Mathar village in Khagaria district after authorities got video evidence allegedly showing him trying to extort money from an e-rikshaw driver.
“It is the duty of District Education Officers to send us periodic reports on such complaints with actions taken against them,” the senior official said..
Bihar Education Minister Sunil Kumar, while not making any remarks on specific complaints against teachers, had earlier said: “The whole idea of routine inspection is to inculcate discipline in the school system, making both students and teachers accountable.”
In a major initiative aimed at enforcing accountability, attendance through face recognition will be mandated from January 1, 2025, across all schools in Bihar.
