As Trump repeats truce claim, Rahul, Kharge target govt

US President Donald Trump has yet again claimed that he “stopped” the recent “war” between India and Pakistan and that 5 jets were shot down in the conflict.

“We stopped wars between India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda,” Trump said at a reception in the White House with the Congress members. “They shot down five planes and it was back and forth… I called them and said, ‘Listen, no more trade. If you do this, you’re not going to be good… They’re both powerful nuclear nations and that would have happened, and who knows where that would have ended up. And I stopped it’,” Trump said. India has repeatedly denied the claim.

Last Friday, Trump – who has repeated his claim at least 20 times since May 10 — said for the first time that “five jets were shot down” during the recent conflict, though he didn’t specify which of the two countries lost the aircraft or whether he was referring to the combined losses of both sides.

Asked about Trump’s claim and if the PM should make a statement, he said, “How can the PM make a statement? What will he say — Trump got it done, he can’t say that. But that is the truth. Trump got the ceasefire done.” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, “When Trump repeatedly states he brought about ceasefire and insults India, the PM should respond firmly. This, in some way, shows weakness.”
