MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addresses a press conference on Thursday (Photo: PTI).The Centre on Thursday said more than 2,790 Indian nationals living illegally in the United States have been sent back to India since January. During his weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the figures while responding to a query.
“Since the beginning of this year, over 2,790 Indian nationals who did not meet the criteria and were residing in the US illegally have returned. Their credentials and nationality were verified before repatriation. These figures are updated till October 29,” Jaiswal said.

He was also asked about deportations from the United Kingdom. “From the UK, around 100 Indian nationals have been deported this year after their nationality was duly verified,” Jaiswal added.
He further said that the US has granted India a six-month exemption from American sanctions on the Chabahar port in Iran. “we remain engaged with US to conclude a trade deal,” he said.
Alluding to the recent rare earths deal between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, Jaiswal said: “Some Indian companies have received licenses for importing rare earth magnets from China… We have to look at how the US and China talks will play into our domain…”
Centre on Afghanistan
Jaiswal also detailed on India-Afghanistan relations in the wake of the recent visit by Talibani Foreign Minister Amir Muttaqi. “As emphasised in the recently adopted India-Afghanistan joint statement, India stands ready to support Afghanistan in its sustainable water management, including on hydroelectric projects. There is a history of cooperation between the 2 countries, including the Salma Dam, which is today called the India-Afghanistan friendship dam,” Jaiswal said.
