Just days after a Bengaluru woman who claimed to be an associate of former minister Varthur Prakash was arrested for allegedly cheating a jewellery shop owner, another jewellery shop owner filed a fresh complaint Saturday against the accused claiming she cheated him of Rs 20.75 lakh.
The Bengaluru police had arrested the accused, Shwetha Gowda, a resident of Bagalakunte, for allegedly defrauding gold jewellery worth Rs 2.73 crore.
In the fresh complaint, Shivamogga-based jeweller R Balaraj Shet alleged that the woman issued invalid cheques after acquiring 285 gram of antique jewellery.
According to the new complaint, Shet was introduced to Gowda through a Bengaluru jeweller. Claiming that she collected antique and diamond jewellery, Gowda initially requested Shet for 250 gram of antique jewellery but stopped communicating soon. On December 11, when Shet’s brother struggled to find a buyer for 285 gram of antique jewellery, Shet sent photos to Gowda and she reportedly showed interest.
Thereafter, she met Shet’s brother near UB City in Bengaluru that evening and collected the jewellery. She allegedly issued three cheques – two for Rs 5 lakh each and one for Rs 6 lakh – promising to pay the remaining Rs 4.75 lakh via RTGS. Later, the complainant discovered the cheques were invalid, and Gowda had switched off her phone.
After learning of her arrest in the earlier fraud case, Shet filed his complaint with the police.
Meanwhile, the police questioned Prakash for several hours regarding the earlier case, though the former MLA denied any connection with the accused.
