Former Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla sworn in as Manipur Governor

Ajay Kumar Bhalla, former home secretary of India, was sworn in as the 19th Governor of Manipur in a formal ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan in Imphal on Friday.

Bhalla was administered the oath by Justice D Krishnakumar, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur, in the presence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, members of the state cabinet, MLAs of both ruling and Opposition camps, senior government and police officials, and top brass of central security forces.

After taking the oath, the Governor received the Rashtriya Salute and inspected the Guard of Honour, presented by personnel of the Manipur Rifles and the India Reserve Battalion.

Bhalla succeeded Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who held the post since July 31, 2024.

Manipur CM’s great expectations

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony, Chief Minister Singh expressed his confidence that peace and normalcy would be restored soon in the state.

“Appointing one of the most intelligent and competent persons as the Governor of Manipur during this trying time shows the serious concern of the Central Government in solving the problems of Manipur. The people of Manipur highly appreciate the move and we are expecting a lot from him (Ajay Kumar Bhalla), particularly in restoring peace in the state. The conflict in Manipur is very complex and cannot be solved overnight. We must have faith in the Central Government,” said the chief minister.


Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a resident of Punjab, is a retired IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre of the 1984 batch. He served as the Union home secretary from August 23, 2019, to August 22, 2024. Bhalla has an extensive career in public administration, having handled key positions, including secretary in the Ministry of Power, and joint secretary in the Ministry of Coal.
