(Representational Photo) The Army Public Schools at various places in the Jammu division have been closed till May 20 as a precautionary measure following reports that terrorists may hit soft targets ahead of the G20 meet being held in Srinagar this month, officials said.
The G20 meet is scheduled from May 22 to 24. Ahead of the global summit, there has been an increase in the movement of terrorists in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch where 10 soldiers have died in two separate terrorist attacks since April 20, according to intelligence inputs.
Senior officials on condition of anonymity, however, admitted that two Army Public Schools in Rajouri have been closed and students put on online teaching mode till May 20. These schools include Army’s Valley View Public School and Army’s Goodwill Public School.
Sources, however, said that Army’s Pinewood Public School in Hamirpur area, near Bhimber Gali in Poonch district, and Army Public School in Akhnoor too have been closed as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the security forces, police and paramilitary forces have been put on heightened alert amid reports of suspicious movement coming in from certain quarters, the police said.
Security forces Wednesday morning launched searches in Purani Poonch and localities near Deputy Commissioner’s office complex in the border town of Poonch following reports that some locals have noticed movement of some suspicious people. Two private schools in the locality were closed as a precautionary measure.
In Dangri village where seven civilians were killed and 14 injured in terrorist attacks in January, the police and the CRPF carried out searches on Monday night following reports that three unidentified people visited a woman living on rent and asked her to keep their bag. By the time the woman managed to go downstairs and informed the landlord, the suspects had gone. The matter was immediately brought to the notice of the police. CRPF personnel were deployed at the nearby pocket in the village. However, the searches yielded no result.
