Prashant Kishor says ‘will retire’ if Nitish Kumar fulfils promise to transfer Rs 2 lakh to women

During his poll campaign, sensing strong anti-incumbency, the political-analyst-turned-politician had said he would resign from politics if the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal United won more than 25 seats in the assembly elections.

Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraaj, in his first media interaction since the Bihar Assembly election 2025 results, took full responsibility for the party’s drubbing in the poll, and claimed that he would quit politics if Nitish Kumar delivers his promise of transferring Rs 2 lakh to 1.5 crore women.

During his poll campaign, sensing strong anti-incumbency, the political-analyst-turned-politician had said he would resign from politics if the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal United won more than 25 seats in the assembly elections.

After Bihar registered a record voter turnout of 64.66 per cent in the first phase of the election on November 6, Prashant Kishor doubled down on his prediction, saying that the jump was owing to a strong desire for change in regime.

However, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition delivered a clean sweep in the polls, winning in 202 seats in the 243-member assembly, while his newly formed party drew a blank despite contesting on 238 seats.

The Mahagathbandhan, with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tejashwi Yadav as its chief minister face ended up securing only 35 seats.

Contradicting his previous statement on quitting politics, Kishor said, “People are talking a lot about my remark on JD(U) winning 25 seats – I still stand by it. If Nitish Kumar transfers the Rs 2 lakh he promised to 1.5 crore women and proves he didn’t win by buying votes, I will retire from politics without any Ifs and Buts,” as quoted by news agency PTI.
