Nearly 1,000 pigs were culled in these four districts to prevent the spread of the disease. (Representational Image)Over 3,050 pigs have died in four districts of Mizoram due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in the last one month, said officials of Mizoram’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department on Saturday.
So far, 46 localities in four districts of the northeastern state – Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Mamit – have been declared as ASF-infected zones by the department.
Nearly 1,000 pigs were culled in these four districts to prevent the spread of the disease.
Of the four infected zones, Siaha district is the most affected, with the cumulative death toll of pigs at 1,651.
Officials stated that the hot climatic conditions and intermittent showers are favourable for the spread of the virus.
In 2024, Mizoram incurred a loss of Rs 336.49 crore due to the African Swine Fever that killed 15,000 pigs, and nearly 24,200 pigs were culled for the prevention of the disease.
The disease killed a total of 1,139 pigs and piglets, and 980 were culled in 2023. Nearly 12,800 pigs and piglets died and 11,686 pigs were culled in 2022, while 33,417 pigs and piglets died and 12,568 pigs were culled in 2021.
The state incurred a loss of Rs 334.14 crore in 2021, followed by Rs 210.32 crore in 2022, and Rs 15.77 crore in 2023 due to the death and culling of pigs.
An official of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department said that over 100 families were compensated for losing their pigs due to the disease.
