Six inmates of the Dharmanagar sub-jail in North Tripura district, including a Bangladesh citizen, escaped from the prison after attacking a security guard on Wednesday, officials said. One of the escapees was arrested in the evening during a massive manhunt initiated for them.
Amid Durga Puja celebrations, five undertrial prisoners and a convict escaped from the prison at Kalikapur around 6 am, when they were brought out for morning rituals and breakfast, a police officer told indianexpress.com. The escapees attacked a jail security guard, Bedu Miah, with some sharp weapons, the officer said, adding that he was taken to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where he is now out of danger.
The prisoners who escaped were identified as Najim Uddin and Md. Rahim Ali, both from Churaibari, situated near the Assam-Tripura boundary; Sunil Debbarma from Melaghar of Sepahijala district; Rosan Ali from Kadamtala of North Tripura district; Abdul Patta of Nilambazar in Assam’s Sribhumi district; and Narayan Chandra Datta of Bangladesh’s Deni district.
While Sunil Debbarma was serving a life sentence for crimes including murder, the others were awaiting trials in various cases. Narayan Chandra Dutta had been arrested under sections of the Passport Act, among others.
Abdul Patta, who was arrested on Wednesday evening in South Chandrapur near Dharmanagar, had been lodged in the prison in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
A massive search operation has been launched in both North Tripura and the nearby district of Unakoti. The Border Security Force has been asked to maintain a strict vigil along the border to prevent unauthorised border crossings, and all entry and exit points on the borders with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh have been put under tight surveillance, the officer added.
