If you are one of those who are buying super green powders online, thinking they are plant-based and nutrient-dense, it is time to take a pause. Though freely recommended on Instagram, these can contain toxins like microcystins, according to Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, Chief Nutritionist, Apollo Hospitals.

Microcystins are produced by certain types of algae. If at all you want to have green powders, buy them from reputable brands that follow strict quality control measures and limit their intake to recommended dosages by a nutritionist.

What is a super green powder that has become the new fad in nutrition?

It is a concentrated form of nutritious greens, known as spirulina, a type of blue-green algae that is packed with various B vitamins, minerals like iron and copper, proteins and rare antioxidants called phycocyanins. Spirulina is also rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid that may help regulate blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health. Furthermore, it contains high levels of chlorophyll, which may help in detoxification and support liver function. Additionally, some studies suggest that spirulina may help improve muscle strength and endurance, making it a potential ally for active individuals and athletes.

It may even trigger extreme allergic responses in some people, leading to symptoms like rashes, breathing difficulty or even anaphylaxis, when your immune system releases a flood of chemicals that sends the body into a state of shock.

Additionally, the high concentration of nutrients and fibre in these powders can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating, gas, or constipation, especially when consumed in large quantities by individuals with sensitive digestive systems. It is advisable to start with small doses and gradually increase consumption to assess tolerance and reduce the risk of side effects.

Can super green powder be made with something other than spirulina?

Leafy green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, wheatgrass and broccoli, can also be dehydrated and ground into a fine powder. These greens are naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making them excellent candidates for super green powder formulations. Kale, for instance, is a powerhouse of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like calcium and iron, while spinach is an excellent source of folate and magnesium.

In addition to leafy greens, other plant-based ingredients like chlorella (another type of algae), moringa leaves and wheatgrass can be incorporated into super green powder blends. Chlorella is renowned for its detoxifying properties, while moringa is a rich source of plant-based protein and numerous vitamins and minerals. Wheatgrass, on the other hand, is highly alkalising and packed with chlorophyll, making it a popular ingredient for supporting overall health and well-being.
