The other day I came across a social media reel that claimed infusing water with cucumber slices could make it alkaline. Nothing is further from the truth. To understand this, we need to explore the chemistry of water, the properties of cucumbers and the concept of alkalinity.

What is alkalinity?

Alkalinity refers to the capacity of water to neutralise acids, which is often measured by its pH level. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7. Alkaline water, on the other hand, has a pH greater than 7, typically ranging from 8 to 9 or higher. The alkaline nature of water is usually achieved through ionization processes or by adding alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium or bicarbonate.

The Role of Cucumbers

Cucumbers contain 95 per cent water and various nutrients, including potassium, vitamin K and antioxidants. They are known for their hydrating properties and are often used in beverages for enhancing flavours. However, cucumbers themselves are not inherently alkaline. Their pH level is typically around 5.1 to 5.7, which classifies them as slightly acidic. When cucumber slices are added to water, they infuse the water with flavour and nutrients but do not significantly alter its pH level. The infusion process does not introduce alkaline minerals or change the water’s chemical composition in a way that would make it alkaline. Instead, the primary effect is the addition of flavour and a small amount of vitamins and antioxidants.

Misconceptions About Alkaline Water

The marketing of alkaline water often suggests that it offers various health benefits, including hydration, detoxification and even disease prevention. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is lacking. The human body is adept at maintaining its pH balance through homeostasis (the body’s internal chemical balance mechanism), primarily through the kidneys and respiratory system, which means that the consumption of alkaline water is unlikely to have a significant impact on overall health. Moreover, once alkaline water enters the stomach, it is neutralised by gastric acids.

Health Benefits of Cucumber water

While cucumber water may not be alkaline, it does offer several health benefits:

The high water content in cucumbers helps maintain hydration, which is crucial for bodily functions.
Cucumber water is a low-calorie alternative to sugary drinks, making it a good choice for weight management.
Cucumbers contain antioxidants that may help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
The hydration and nutrients in cucumber water can promote healthy skin by aiding in detoxification and providing essential vitamins.

For those seeking to increase their intake of alkaline substances, it is more effective to consume foods and drinks that are naturally high in alkaline minerals rather than relying on cucumber-infused water.
