The Thursday Murders Club
Netflix

Based on the bestselling novel by Richard Osman, this is a whodunit directed by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone filmmaker Chris Columbus and with a screenplay by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote. The film follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case. Its stellar ensemble cast features Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce and David Tennant. Working with such an adept cast, director Columbus aimed to bring out a balance of humor, intrigue, and heart, and the result is a singularly moving, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure. “Thematically it’s interesting that we’ve got four elderly people who are living in a retirement community and who are fascinated by death and murder,” he says.

Vice Is Broke
MUBI

Creator of Huang’s World and Fresh off the Boat, Eddie Huang’s riveting, first-person documentary on the meteoric rise and spectacular fall of Vice Media, Vice Is Broke premiered as part of the TIFF Docs program at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. “A deeply personal, insider’s perspective from the VICE journalist, the film features a stimulating array of VICE alumni — daring reporters, meme account admins, Internet columnists, food critics, and alt-right agitators,” says its synopsis. Directed and narrated by Huang, it is an unfiltered examination of the media empire of the indie sleaze era. Meeting key writers and players from its time, Huang tracks Vice’s story from its scrappy Montreal alt-punk zine origins to its valuation at $5.7bn and up to its recent bankruptcy.
