Sumeet Vyas admits Permanent Roommates was never intended to be a ‘cinematic marvel’, Nidhi Singh remembers ‘changing in cars’ during season 1 shoot
Permanent Roommates actors Sumeet Vyas and Nidhi Singh talk about the third season, why the show is important and their memories from the good ol' days.

A long time back, when the internet was expensive, 2G and 3G were the best you can get, and OTT channels were still sometime away for all of us in India, TVF launched India’s first web series Permanent Roommates. Starring Sumeet Vyas and Nidhi Singh, the show encapsulates the relationship between Mikesh and Tanya, and the ups and downs they face when the prospect of marriage looms large after being in a long-distance relationship. After a successful experiment in 2014, the makers produced its season two years later. And now, after massive demand from fans, they have launched its third season, which dropped on Wednesday on Amazon Prime Video.
The lead stars along with debutant director Shreyansh Pandey spoke to indianexpress.com about their excitement regarding the third season. Nidhi shared how she was in disbelief as the team had earlier discussed about getting a new season but it didn’t come to fruition. Sharing that when they were recording the audio show, Shreyansh said they have finalised the script and would meet her soon. “He never turned up. I was like, why is he lying to me? Am I not dubbing well? So it was the case of crying wolf and when they told me about it this time, I was like let’s meet at the table read. That’s when I will know it’s happening,” she shared with a smile.
Sumeet shared that during the audio series, they realised that there was a prospect of taking it ahead as a full-fledged show. However, they were also sure that they did not want to do something for the sake of it. He said, “We did not want to do it just to impress. That can never be the right intent to do a show. We wanted to keep it light and make it a happy place. When the show came out, it wasn’t like a cinematic marvel but it was to take them to a happy space. We all have our own favourites while growing up, be it Friends, Dekh Bhai Dekh, or How I Met Your Mother. We wanted to bring that comforting feeling to the audience. And I am so happy that people are excited about our comeback.”
Nidhi Singh called ‘Mikesh and Tania’ a ‘non-traditionalist’ couple, who can be unpredictable. However, it’s the love between them that keeps them strong. She also shared that the couple is still not married in the show, however, that never makes them take each other for granted. When asked what has been the biggest learning for them while playing these characters, Sumeet said, “For me it was to build a strong trust factor. And it’s not just the infidelity but that trust has to be on so many levels. It’s about the times when you say something and it doesn’t sit well with your partner or vice versa. There has to be a comfort and confidence level between partners where they can share anything they want to without the fear of being judged. That’s a lesson we all need to learn and I think that only happens with time.”
Sumeet Vyas shared that they had a ‘negligible’ budget when they shot the first season. Nidhi Singh reminisced the old times stating, “I remember we used to change in the cars that would take us to locations. There are scenes where our mics are showing but people haven’t pointed it out yet.” Her co-star added that their intent was never to make money and they are glad that they have managed to conserve that spirit and continue to tell their story, their own way.
