It seems that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has hit it out of the park this year with his debut series, the period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. While the show became the second most-watched non-English series globally on Netflix during its release week, it also ignited a significant amount of debate, drawing both praise and criticism. In its first week, the show garnered 4.5 million views and accumulated 33 million hours of viewership.
Featuring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal Mehta and Taha Shah Badussha in key roles, Heeramandi is described in its official synopsis as a story about “India’s elite tawaifs, or courtesans, living amid the fight for independence from British rule in the 1940s. As the courtesans entertain aristocrats, they scheme to fulfil their secret desires and clash against the powers that be.”
Now, the series has clinched the title of “Most Popular Indian Web Series” of 2024 in a list published by IMDb, an online database of information related to films, television series, and more. Ranking first among Indian web series released between January 1 and November 25, 2024, Heeramandi achieved this distinction among shows with an average IMDb user rating of 5 or higher. Interestingly, Google’s recently unveiled “Year in Search” report for 2024 revealed that Heeramandi was the most searched show in India, further cementing its impact among the masses.
While the action crime thriller Mirzapur Season 3 — created by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna and starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Rasika Dugal and Shweta Tripathi — claimed the second spot on IMDb’s list of 2024’s most popular Indian web series the comedy-drama Panchayat Season 3 — created by The Viral Fever and featuring Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy and Sanvikaa — secured third place. Both shows are currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Kapil Sharma’s The Great Indian Kapil Show took the 10th spot.
