Netflix’s biggest Indian original series yet, the period drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has debuted at the number two spot on the platform’s weekly top 10 list for non-English language shows. Created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Heeramandi raked in 4.5 million views, with 33 million accumulated viewership hours. The eight-episode show’s total run time is seven hours and 19 minutes. Heeramandi trailed only The Asunta Case, which scored nearly 12 million views in its second week. Netflix shows tend to show an increase in viewership in the second week, which means that Heeramandi could reach bigger heights in the coming few days.
The show’s number two debut also puts it ahead of The Great Indian Kapil Show, which debuted at the number three spot a few weeks ago, with 2.5 million views. The variety comedy series’ accumulated views dropped to just 1 million in week six. Maamla Legal Hai, the other recent Netflix India series, debuted at the bottom of the top 10 list, with 1.1 million views in week one.
Heeramandi’s week one viewership puts it ahead of major international Netflix shows such as Supersex (3.2 million in week one), The Killer Paradox (3.1 million in week one) and Gyeongseong Creature (3 million views in week one). But the show trailed the massive numbers put up by Parasyte: The Grey (6.3 million views in week one, which increased to 9.8 million in week two) and the Money Heist spin-off Berlin (11.3 million views in week one).

Netflix’s English-language programming is in a different league altogether, with shows such as Fool Me Once (37 million views), Avatar: The Last Airbender (21 million views), Griselda (20 million views), The Gentlemen (12.2 million views), and One Day (5.3 million views) and putting up massive week one numbers. But Heeramandi out-performed the week one views of Ripley (2.3 million views) and Baby Reindeer (2.6 million views). Although the latter show has emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation, generating 13.3 million views in week two and 22 million views in week three.
Starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman and others, Heeramandi has proven to be divisive among viewers, with some praising Bhansali’s visuals and others saying that it’s all style and no substance.
