When Heartstopper debuted on Netflix in 2022, it captured an essential facet on the spectrum of gay identity. After nearly a one-year wait, the British LGBTQ+ series has returned with its second season and just like the first season, the show does not keep its main characters in a state of urgency and desperation.
The show is caught in a unique paradox: a dance between the reluctance to fully embrace truth and releasing your convictions to hand over the burden of guilt to your own self. It’s simple but has memorable characters that really make it work.
Nick is dealing with his inner struggles, but fear not, because Charlie is like his adorable guardian angel! He’s all about protecting Nick from going through tough times like when he came out. Whenever Nick and Charlie are together, it’s like experiencing that super sweet and innocent first love feeling all over again. Like, hearts and butterflies everywhere.

But obviously there has to be trouble in paradise, right? Throughout the episodes, Nick and Charlie’s adorable bond will give you butterflies in your tummy. But at times, you might feel a bit frustrated with Nick for not standing up for Charlie during humiliating moments. While Charlie completely understands, he gathers the courage and says, ‘I am dying to tell the world that you are my boyfriend.’ However, Nick sleeps through that conversation.
The chemistry between Carla-Darcy, Tao-Elle, and Isaac takes center stage occasionally, introducing fresh dynamics that keep audiences hooked throughout the season’s journey. Even Imogen’s personal life changes deliver a meaningful message. And here’s the best part. The show knows just when to slow down and get serious, but it also knows how to amp up the cute and dramatic moments.
When an important part of the plot centers around a teenage school trip to Paris or abroad, it may come across as tropey and lacking originality. However, sometimes sticking to familiar elements can still be enjoyable, and the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” right?
The cast includes Kit Connor as Nick Nelson, Joe Locke as Charlie Spring, William Gao as Tao Xu, Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent, Corinna Brown as Tara Jones, Kizzy Edgell as Darcy Olsson, and Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson.
