Netflix India got no chill! The OTT streamer seems to be hopping on the Tangerines smile challenge—but with a Bollywood twist. IU and Park Bo Gum’s When Life Gives You Tangerines has turned into one of the platform’s biggest K-content hits, boasting a whopping 9.3 IMDb rating and still chilling in Netflix’s Top 10 list, even though the show wrapped up two weeks ago. Fans have always drawn parallels between Bollywood and K-drama moments, and now Netflix just went ahead and compared Kim Seon Ho’s dreamy wedding scene to Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic Om Shanti Om moment.

Netflix spots Shah Rukh Khan vibes in Kim Seon Ho’s smile

Kim Seon Ho, who played Park Chung Seop, went viral for a particular scene where he’s about to marry Geum Myeong, the daughter of Gwan Sik and Ae Sun. The duo arrives separately at the wedding hall in Jeju. The moment the bride walks in, dressed in her white gown, and their eyes meet, he tilts his head in a total swoon moment. Looking completely smitten, he smiles, winks, and playfully pretends to faint at the sight of her beauty. In return, Geum Myeong laughs, clearly flustered, and hides her face behind the bouquet, while Gwan Sik quietly watches the whole moment unfold from a distance.

Now, Netflix India, basking in the success of the show being a major hit in the country, took to Instagram to compare the scene to Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s 2007 film Om Shanti Om with a caption, “When life gives you a Dreamy Girl, you swoon.” The very scene that still stands as Bollywood’s best take on love at first sight. In it, SRK’s character Om totally fanboys over Shanti Priya as she walks the red carpet in a shimmery pink gown, her hair decked with silver jewellery. Om calls out her name loudly in the crowd, she turns around, and he instantly faints (dramatically). Bodyguards drag him away as he keeps staring at her, completely smitten, while Vishal-Shekhar’s “Aankhon Mein Teri… ajab si ajab si adaayein hain” plays in the background.

Except Netflix had their own take: “AANKHON MEIN MERI… aansu hai”—and honestly, fair. This show has been a tear-fest for viewers all around the globe. The fact that a real man like Gwan Sik existed (since the story is inspired by real real-life character) has made it all the more emotional. Fans are now manifesting a Gwan Sik in their own lives, arguing that men like him, walking, talking green flags, do exist. And IMDb seems to agree, summing it up best: “The perfect guide to being a green flag doesn’t exis—”

“Both green flags on one screen,” a social media user commented on the video. “SRK did it first!” another wrote. “When Life Gives You Tangerines is so Bollywood-coded,” a third added. “When K-drama meets Bollywood,” one more said. “Best parallel.”

When Life Gives You Tangerines stars IU and Park Bo Gum in the lead roles. Set against the backdrop of South Korea’s Jeju Island in the 1980s, the show revolves around Ae Sun and Gwan Sik, two childhood sweethearts who become lifelong partners. Their bond is unbreakable, as they go to great lengths to protect one another. Ae Sun, burdened with the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings after her mother passes away, must give up her dreams of becoming a poet. Meanwhile, Gwan Sik, a neighbour from a slightly wealthier, humble Jeju family, has had a childhood crush on her. Unable to watch her suffer, he does whatever he can to support her. Their relationship continues to flourish as they marry, raise children, grow old together, and even when he passes, Gwan Sik ensures she lives a full life. As heartwarming as it sounds, this slice-of-life comfort K-drama is currently the most-watched K-content on Netflix.
