Vishnu Manchu’s ambitious mythological drama Kannappa gets release date

Kannnappa, the much-anticipated pan-Indian film, headlined by Vishnu Manchu, features an interesting ensemble, including Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar, Prabhas and Kajal Aggarwal in important cameos.

One pan-Indian project that is gradually brewing in Telugu cinema is Vishnu Manchu’s ambitious mythological drama, Kannappa. Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh, Kannappa is backed by Vishnu’s father and veteran actor Mohan Babu under the 24 Frames Factory banner. The makers have now announced the release date of the much-awaited multi-starrer. Kannappa, which was earlier set for a December release, has now been rescheduled to hit the screens on April 25, 2025. 

Based on the story of Bhakta Kannappa, a follower of Lord Shiva, the film features Vishnu in the titular role. The star-studded cast includes Mohan Babu in the role of Mahadeva Shastri, Sarath Kumar as Nathanathudu, and Madhoo as Pannaga. But what makes this film a truly special project is the cameos of pan-Indian superstars like Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, and Kajal Aggarwal. While Akshay will be playing the role of Lord Shiva, Kajal is set to essay the character of Goddess Parvathi. Prabhas and Mohanlal would also be appearing in special cameos in the film.

In the announcement poster shared by Vishnu Manchu and Akshay Kumar among others, we see a trident and a damru being perched amidst mountains. The tagline on the poster read, “The untold story of Lord Shiva’s greatest devotee.” According to myth, Kannappa is one of the 63 nayanmar who devoted their life to Lord Shiva. It is said that Kannappan, a hunter, decided to sacrifice his eyes for the Siva lingam, but was stopped just in time by Lord Shiva, who understood the depth of his devotion and offered him the coveted ‘mukti’.

Incidentally, the story has been told multiple times on the silver screen before right from Kannappa Nayanar (1938, Tamil) to Bedara Kannappa (1954, Kannada) and Kalahasti Mahatyam (1954, Telugu), Bhakta Kannappa (1976, Telugu) and Shiva Mecchida Kannappa (1988, Kannada). The iconic role of Kannappa has been played by Dr Rajkumar, Krishnam Raju, Shivarajkumar, and Puneeth Rajkumar.

The latest version of Kannappa, headlined by Vishnu Manchu, is set to be released in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
