What SS Rajamouli did with his Baahubali films is an important milestone in Indian cinema. Opening the gates to the pan-Indian phenomenon has lead to a complete rehaul of the system. Every actor now not just wants to be a superstar, but wishes they were pan-Indian superstars. But what he also did was to unify an audience that was seemingly distant in terms of sensibilities. He proved to filmmakers and audiences that language isn’t restrictive. And it is this confidence that pushed many filmmakers to try their wares in the pan-Indian playing field. And one of the biggest success stories of the post-Baahubali era is undoubtedly Pushpa 2: The Rule.
In the ‘wildfire success party’ event, director Sukumar acknowledged the direct impact of Rajamouli on Pushpa’s ambitions. Starting off his speech by thanking Rajamouli, Sukumar said, “He was the one who pushed me to release the first part of Pushpa in Hindi. In fact, he facilitated a smooth release by talking to distributors and pushing for a wide release.”

Sukumar also revealed that it was SS Rajamouli who dispelled all the doubts he had about himself and Pushpa. “When I told him that I don’t think my film is a pan-India film, he simply said it is the release that decides pan-Indian status. He pointed out that if I release the film pan-India, then it becomes a pan-India movie. Otherwise, it’s a Telugu movie,” said the Rangasthalam filmmaker.

Rajamouli’s words proved true as the Pushpa films have not only made humungous amount of money, but also captured the imagination of the entire country across linguistic and regional barriers. After three days of release, Pushpa 2: The Rule has managed to earn over Rs 600 crore worldwide, and is expected to enter the Rs 1000 crore club very soon marking Allu Arjun and Sukumar’s maiden entry.
