Even before the Baahubali phenomenon, SS Rajamouli’s fantasy film Eega put him on the national radar. The story of an underdog in the form of a housefly avenging the villain might sound absurd on paper, but like always, Rajamouli’s conviction and execution made the film a thorough entertainer back in 2012 when VFX and CGI wasn’t as advanced and cost-efficient like now. One can only wonder what the film would have become had it been made by Rajamouli now. Nani, in a recent interview, said “it would undoubtedly become the biggest film of all time”.

Speaking to India Today, Nani, who played the lead actor in Eega, said that he is sure that the film would get global recognition had it been released today. “What Rajamouli garu did back then was already mind-blowing, so imagine if he were to make Eega today with the current technology and his enhanced understanding. It would undoubtedly become the biggest film of all time and receive tremendous recognition,” he said.

According to Nani, the reason behind the success of Eega is that it is a story of an underdog, a weak hero, taking on the mightiest villain. The film was a nationwide hit and brought in a lot of praise for Sudeep, who played the villain. Nani, on the other hand, despite playing the lead role had only limited screen time, but that was enough for the star to leave a lasting mark. Samantha Ruth Prabhu played the female lead and it turned out to be a milestone in her career.

In 2022, during the Oscar campaign for RRR, SS Rajamouli’s Eega also got attention in the US as it was played in Los Angeles as part of Beyond Fest. The film received a standing ovation there. It is also a favourite among foreign YouTubers who have amassed views reacting to the film.

Currently, SS Rajamouli is working on the pre-production of his film with Mahesh Babu. On the other hand, Nani has Hi Nanna lined up for release.
