Anupam Mittal accuses Shark Tank India pitcher of ‘betraying’ his investors; Kunal Bahl questions his integrity during heated exchange
Shark Tank India 4: Anupam Mittal got into a heated debate with Ritesh Agarwal, who decided to back a group of founders that Anupam had roundly dismissed.

A heated debate unfolded among the ‘sharks’ on the latest episode of Shark Tank India, as the majority of the panel strongly dismissed a group of founders pitching an all-in-one social media application for professionals. Called Median, the app was described by Kunal Bahl as a cumulation of Twitter, Google News, GitHub, LinkedIn, and Kickstarter. He wasn’t too impressed by this lack of clarity, and let the founders know that they should focus on one aspect of the app and double down on growing it. The founders asked for Rs 50 lakh in exchange of 1% equity, valuing their company at Rs 50 crore.
They said that they have already raised Rs 5 crore from several investors, and are looking to raise more money. But Kunal wasn’t impressed by their answers. When he asked the founders about a rival app called Grapevine, their leader said, “Grapevine is 24 times more funded than us and they’ve been around longer.” Kunal replied, “I’ll say one thing, it’s easy to be dismissive about competition.” The founder assured Kunal that the person running Grapevine is a friend of his. “But you were dismissive about your friend.”
Kunal backed out, as did Namita Thapar, who said that she finds them to be extremely confused. But it was Anupam Mittal who was the harshest in his feedback. When the founders agreed to take Kunal and Ritesh Agarwal’s advice and pivot to one feature on their app, Anupam said to them, “Your product is an aggregator, your roadmap is also an aggregation of the feedback you’ve received here. I don’t think you can build anything, my friend.”
The founder said that they are open to changing their goals based on what works, but Anupam accused them of betraying their older investors by changing their core goals. Ritesh was the only ‘shark’ willing to bet on the founders, much to the shock of his colleagues. He made them a conditional offer, and said that he would give them Rs 50 lakh for 2.5% equity, but only if they transform their app into a start-up hub. When they agreed, Anupam was incensed. He said, “You’re betraying your founders for Rs 50 lakh. Like I said, you’re here for marketing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But what you need is tough love. Anyone can be a cheerleader, but they’re doing you a disservice. You’ll find yourself in trouble later on.”
As Ritesh got up to give the founders a ceremonial cheque, Anupam kept berating them. He said that he wouldn’t stop, even when Ritesh asked him to. “Don’t worry, we’ll get more sharks on board,” he told the founders, and Aman Gupta declared, “You’re not getting me.”
