Shark Tank India pitcher panics as Aman Gupta asks a trick question, tells her, ‘I’m not here only to give money’
Shark Tank India 4: Anupam Mittal and Aman Gupta's trick questions threw a young entrepreneur off, as she pitched her lifestyle brand on the latest episode of the reality show.

A young entrepreneur named Komal pitched her lifestyle brand Kanvas on the latest episode of Shark Tank India, which featured Anupam Mittal, Aman Gupta, Namita Thapar, Kunal Bahl and Ritesh Agarwal on the panel of ‘sharks’. Komal said that she combined her lifelong passion for art and footwear to create Kanvas, which produces unique shoes that feature India’s various art forms. The shoes cost an average of Rs 4000, and Komal said that she releases new designs every season. She asked for Rs 60 lakh in exchange of 6% equity, valuing her company at Rs 10 crore.
While the ‘sharks’ were impressed with her designs, Namita wondered if people would buy a second pair because the designs looked very similar. Komal assured her that she has a 23% retention rate, and that there are enough differentiating factors between the products to not confuse the buyer. But a couple of trick questions posed by Anupam and Aman put her in a spot. Anupam asked her, “Komal, purpose, passion, or profit, pick one.” Komal thought about it for a moment, and picked ‘purpose’. She said that if one’s purpose is authentic, profits will follow. Ritesh appreciated her answer, as did Anupam. But he said that he wanted her to say, “All three.”
The ‘sharks’ were also disappointed to learn that Komal hasn’t really seen much growth in her business in the last five years, with revenue increasing from Rs 67 lakh to Rs 77 lakh. Kunal and Namita dropped out of the deal for these reasons, and Kunal told her that the footwear market is the most difficult to crack. Ritesh advised her to either increase the prices of her products and control the supply and demand, or to expand beyond just shoes. He also dropped out.
Aman was the only ‘shark’ who seemed to be interested, but he wasn’t sure either. As a test, he asked her, “What do you want from us?” And Komal instantly replied, “Rs 60 lakh for 6%!” While the ‘sharks’ laughed, Aman muttered, “That killed it for me.” He continued, “I’m not here just to give money. If you want a return on your investment, just invest in the stock market, you’ll get better returns. I’m here to give value. But when you said you want just the money, that killed it for me.” Anupam rose to her defence, and said, “She didn’t mean it that way.”
But Aman had made up his mind. He said that he’s very interested in the sneaker market, but because of Komal’s lack of clarity, he wants to back out. Komal left without a deal, and in her post-pitch interview, said, “They are looking to invest in brands where they can get a good exit, but I’m an artisanal person. building a brand takes patience, it’ll happen.”
