Anupam Mittal, Namita Thapar butt heads on Shark Tank India after he says she ‘inherited her business’, tells her she ‘shouldn’t be on the show’
Shark Tank India 4: A husband-wife duo pitched a unique idea on the show, but seemed to stir a major disagreement between Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal.

A married couple with decades of experience in the corporate sector pitched their brand Gofig on the latest episode of Shark Tank India‘s ongoing fourth season. Through the business, they plan on selling ‘surplus and near-expiry’ products that would otherwise go to waste. They informed the panel of ‘sharks’ that food worth an estimated Rs 50,000 crore is dumped every year because it has expired. They plan on selling such products by tying up directly with brands, and finding channels through which the products can be sold to consumers. The couple, Disha and Gaurav, asked for Rs 50 lakh in exchange for 2% equity, valuing their business at Rs 25 crore.
They admitted that they are currently pre-money, but it was their model that sparked a debate among the ‘sharks’. Tension could be felt between Namita Thapar and Anupam Mittal from the onset, after Anupam commented on Gaurav’s family business, and said that even Namita ‘inherited’ her company from her father. But things became heated when Anupam said that Gaurav and Disha are ‘independently wealthy’, and asked them, “Do you even need to work for money now?”
This seemed to irk Namita, who said, “What kind of question is that?” Anupam replied, “It’s a very relevant question Namita, let me finish. This is Shark Tank, it’s capitalism in its true form. If you’re uncomfortable with that question, you shouldn’t be here.” Anupam said that he disagrees with the founders’ model, and told them that they should think about setting up physical stores instead of trying to build a B2B business. “India mein value-seeking, bargain-hunting customers ki line lag jayegi. I don’t fundamentally agree with your thesis, and fundamentally, I don’t like where this is going, so I’m out,” he said.
Namita made it clear that she doesn’t agree with Anupam’s point of view, and said that she believes money can be made while doing good for society. But she backed out as well. Aman Gupta said that he cannot invest in them at this early a stage, while Ritesh Agarwal agreed with Anupam, and advised them to set up physical stores. Even Peyush Bansal was of the same opinion.
He said that at this stage, he’d want a third of their company, and offered them Rs 1 crore. “You have a very unique, novel idea. Expiry is a big problem. The problem is that you guys have come from a consulting background, so you’re over-engineering. Drive the car, my friend. Open a store. Until you think like a disruptor, it’ll be very difficult. I’m just telling you to change your thought-process,” he said. Ultimately, they couldn’t make a deal, and the founders left empty handed.
