‘Rupali Ganguly does some great comedy on Anupamaa’: Sumeet Raghavan says she is still the ‘punching bag’ of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai team

Sumeet Raghavan shared that Rupali Ganguly was quite like her character Monisha Sarabhai and would be just as messy.

Rupali Ganguly is the most successful television actor currently, and has been for the last few years but fans of the actor would remember that way before she became a household name with Anupamaa, she was well known for playing Monisha Sarabhai in the comedy Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. In a recent interview, her co-star from the show, Sumeet Raghavan, recalled how the cast and crew would pull her leg for her acting and continue to do so even though she is on the most popular show on television.

In a chat with Pinkvilla, Sumeet was asked about his camaraderie with his Sarabhai vs Sarabhai castmates and he shared, “You have done something once and you have accomplished something. Now it’s difficult to emulate that, which we tried to do in 2015 when we did 10 episodes, but people kept comparing it to the original episodes and said, ‘But it’s not the same.’ I am of the opinion, ‘why bother with it?’” He added, “Once you have made a Taj Mahal, even if the same workers get together, they can’t make it again.”

When asked about his equation with Rupali, he shared that back in the day, she had just wrapped the medical drama show Sanjivani, and producer Aatish Kapadia would make fun of Rupali’s acting on that show. “She might be doing Anupamaa now but we still pull Rupali’s leg. Back when she was cast, she used to do Sanjivani. And when Rupali was cast, Aatish’s thinking was so clear that the kind of melodrama she did in Sanjivani, she has to do the same kind of melodrama here. She used to do comedy there when she had to be serious, she has to do the same thing here,” he shared with a laugh.

Sumeet shared that Aatish felt that Sanjivani was a “comedy show” and recalled, “Rupali used to say ‘What do you mean Aatish? Was I doing comedy?’ And Aatish would say, ‘Yes, Sanjivani was a comedy show’.” He added, “We still pull her leg when you do some great comedy in Anupamaa. So basically, Rupali is our punching bag but she is a sport, she is a darling.”

Talking about Ratna Pathak Shah, Sumeet shared that she might look strict, but she was just as fun as the rest of the cast. He recalled that Ratna and Rupali would share a make-up room and while Ratna’s side of the room was neat and tidy, Rupali was just like her character Monisha. “Her side of the make-up room would be a complete mess. It would look like a bomb has dropped there and Ratna’s side used to be nice and tidy. Ratna would look at her and say ‘Oh god Rupali!’ They were chalk and cheese, Rupali is still the same,” he shared.

Sumeet was last seen in Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey.
