(Photo: Nikhil Chinapa/Instagram) Former Roadies judge and video jockey Nikhil Chinapa recently conducted an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit where he shared what would he like to change about Roadies and what is his current equation with his fellow VJs like Rannvijay Singha, Cyrus Sahukar, Mini Mathur and others.
During the AMA session, a user asked Chinapa why did they bully people on Roadies, even those who seemed genuine and was the show scripted. In response, the VJ wrote, “It wasn’t scripted but the idea of the show was to put people under pressure (sometimes over nonsensical/irrational topics) to see if they’d be able to react. The main show was actually a lot tougher – and if you couldn’t hack the pressure in the auditions, you wouldn’t be able to hack it on the show.”
Asked about the one thing he would like to change about Roadies, Chinapa replied, “I used to hate doing the round-table chats with everyone. It was a sponsor commitment for VOOT :D.” The host-VJ had been associated with Roadies since 2017.
Nikhil Chinapa was among the first few faces to host music shows on MTV after winning the MTV VJ Hunt in 1999. But now he feels the channel has lost that personal touch in the absence of VJs and songs playing on a loop. If he could, he would bring back the times when the viewers were taken into a song by a VJ.
Sharing what he loved about the ‘old MTV’ and what would he bring back to it if given a chance, he said, “Just the chatter of VJs introducing music. I’ve always loved that personal touch of someone talking you into a song (radio is still my first love) and I miss that on the music platforms. Back 2 back music just seems a bit impersonal.”

Recalling his time as a VJ, Nikhil Chinapa said that what happened behind the screen was “pretty much” what viewers saw on the screen. He joked, “Cyrus (Broacha) was just as funny and always wore unwashed shorts.” The VJ is still in touch will all the other VJs with whom he worked during his days at MTV.
When a Reddit user asked, “Are you still in touch with the guys from MTV or was it strictly a professional relationship?”, Chinapa responded, “We were many things as MTV VJs, but I’m not sure we were professional. :D :D We still hang out occasionally. We recently had a reunion and I met Cyrus (Broacha) and Malaika after ages. Maria (Goretti) and I chat regularly. Gaurav Kapur, and Yudi (Cyrus) Sahukar are really close friends and I follow Mini (Mathur) and Shenaz (Treasurywala) on IG and I’m a fan of both. Rann (Rannvijay Singha) and I hang out quite often and I recently met Anusha (Dandekar) at Supersonic. It was great seeing her again too.”

After spending 23 years with MTV, Nikhil Chinapa feels that the channel now needs “new blood”. On being asked about chances of doing a new show with the channel, the VJ replied, “I’m always interested in doing new things. That said, I think MTV needs new blood too, don’t you think? I was with them for 23 years and while I loved it and would love to be back sometime, I think it’s good for some new blood to come through too.”
