Popular TV sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) has been in the soup after one of its actors accused producer Asit Modi of harassment. Now, actor Monika Bhadoriya, who played the role of Baga’s love interest Bawri, has opened up about the toxic environment on the show’s set and how her payment was delayed by the makers for more than a year.

In a new interview, Monika revealed that the show’s makers ‘torture’ the artists and do not follow the rules laid by Cine And TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA). “I was a very different kind of person when I joined TMKOC and the show completely changed me. When I looked at myself, I thought ‘What have I become working with them?’ There was a lot of negativity. So I left TMKOC and worked on myself. They used to torture me and I thought of committing suicide. The makers of TMKOC have their own set of rules which are different from the industry and they don’t follow the rules of CINTAA.” She also accused the makers of not making things clear in the contract.

Monika revealed that this happens to a lot of actors working on the show but they refrain from speaking about it, probably because they need to work. The actor spoke about the time when no one supported her and said, “When I left the show, nobody stood by my side. I approached the media and when the media wanted to talk to me, they made me sign a bond and said, ‘If you’ll sign these papers and not go to media, we will release your due payment, otherwise no.’  Even after signing the bond, they did not clear my payment. I called them for a year and at one point, they stopped picking up my calls. Someone told me ‘Call them and say I will go to CINTAA’.”

Monika said that after she told them about approaching CINTAA, the production head Sohail called her and asked her to meet. When she went for the meeting, the production head, instead of solving her issues, started yelling at her. However, the actor did not let Sohail intimidate her and told him, “Waah, sab kuch aap hi k favour, hum gaali bhi khaye, torture bhi jhele, paise bhi na do, aur hum kahi nahi jaye (Everything can’t be in your favour. We should bear the torture, we should bear the ill-treatment and we should not complain also?)” After this, the production head released her payment and told her not to complain to CINTAA.

TMKOC is the longest-running show and is produced by Asit Modi. Actors Jennifer Mistry and Shailesh Lodha left the show recently.
