Kapil Sharma, who entered our living rooms with his laugh riot – The Kapil Sharma Show, has been facing a down fall of sorts after his face-off with co-actor Sunil Grover which took place on his way back from Australia early this year. At the trailer launch of his film, Firangi, Kapil opened up and made some heartening confessions about his fight with alcoholism and suicidal thoughts, his health issues and how Shah Rukh Khan asked him to take a break and gather himself.

Here are some confessions made by Kapil Sharma.

1. I was slipping into depression and had suicidal thoughts.

At the launch of his film, Firangi on Tuesday, Kapil Sharma opened up on his decline. He said it was all triggered by panic attacks that he suffered. “I could not step on the stage to perform and would cancel the shoot. I suffered from anxiety and drank myself silly. I would stay locked up in the office with my pet dog. People stopped coming on the show and I went off the radar.”

He also revealed how he had suicidal thoughts. He said, “One of my close friends asked me to shift to his seaside apartment. He thought a change of scene would be good for me. As I saw the wide expanse of sea from his balcony, I felt like jumping into it. I was depressed; it felt like the world was gunning for me.”

2. Sobriety came with a price.

Kapil also spoke about how he turned to being an alcoholic thinking it would help him. He said, “I used to travel a lot for my film. Almost 7-8 hours used to go in it. And the media used to tell so much about me that I’m an alcoholic and all. I never had a PR to control all the image bashing. Then, there is Twitter and all this pressure. Now, I am impulsive – that’s just the way I am. I can’t do anything about it. However I may be, one thing is certain that I am a complete pure-hearted soul. All this negative publicity had put me in depression.”

3. I cancelled shoots with SRK and Anil Kapoor because I couldn’t perform.

Kapil Sharma cancelling shoots for The Kapil Sharma Show even when bigwigs like Shah Rukh Khan and Anil Kapoor were supposed to shoot with him, stirred a lot of controversy. Clarifying his stance on this, Kapil said, “SRK had to come at 7, and I was on the sets at 2 pm. But at 8, I couldn’t think I could do it. I couldn’t perform. Same happened with Anil (Kapoor) sir. They were all very supportive. They told me to rest. It was reported that they left angrily, but they returned to check on me. Then I went to Bangalore and I locked myself in a room and started drinking a lot to hurt myself. People would tell me to come out of my office, where I locked myself. To get away from all the negativity, I would drink. In the bargain I cancelled a lot of my shows.”
