After appearing on the latest season of Shark Tank India to pitch his protein powder company Beast Life, YouTuber Gaurav Taneja participated in a panel discussion at IIT Delhi with Azhar Iqubal. Azhar appears as a ‘shark’ on the popular reality show himself, but wasn’t a part of the episode featuring Gaurav. The episode generated a lot of interest among fans, considering Gaurav’s popularity on the internet, and the huge numbers that his business is generating. It also generated controversy for the criticism that Gaurav received from Anupam Mittal.

At the IIT panel, Gaurav said that his favourite ‘sharks’ are Azhar and Ritesh Agarwal, and expressed disappointment that they weren’t a part of his episode. When someone from the crowd shouted Anupam’s name, Gaurav said quietly, “Woh bhi bahut pyaare hain. Pyaar hamara hai, aisa nahi hai.” Gaurav also indirectly suggested that Sony might have unfairly edited his episode to portray him in a negative light. When someone from the crowd said that they wanted to see him interact with former ‘shark’ Ashneer Grover, who was known for his no-nonsense attitude on the show, Gaurav said, “Yes, perhaps Sony TV would’ve had an even better time cutting that exchange.”

Gaurav joked that generally, he learns from every experience in life. “But wahan jaake kuch nahi seekha,” he said, as the crowd laughed. On the show, Gaurav and his co-founder asked the ‘sharks’ for Rs 1 crore in exchange of 1% equity, valuing their company at Rs 100 crore. They also claimed to have made sales worth Rs 1 crore in the first hour of their launch. But several ‘sharks’, mainly Anupam, found holes in Gaurav’s attitude and approach to his business. Anupam said, “When I started, I was a lot like you. I thought of myself as a star, but when you think of yourself as a star, you think you’re infallible, you can’t allocate time in startups, you have to be there all the time… It’s not that I don’t trust you, but I trust in Indian entrepreneurship, and they have so much energy, so much passion, they won’t let a part-timer like you win. That’s the reason I’m out.”

At the IIT panel, Gaurav said that he appreciated Peyush Bansal’s comments about him. “Peyush said that he still works so hard even though his company has reached such heights. And I was standing there and just absorbing what he was saying. You can lose your sense of reality after looking at your numbers, but it’s important to ground yourself.” Gaurav couldn’t secure a deal on Shark Tank.
