‘Rannvijay told me the slap should be heard till Petronas Towers’: Ex-Roadies winner Ashutosh Kaushik defends slapping Shambhavi in finale
Ashutosh Kaushik, the winner of the fifth season of MTV Roadies, reflected on the controversial finale task in which he slapped co-contestant Shambhavi.

Former Roadies and Bigg Boss winner Ashutosh Kaushik opened up about the infamous task in the final episode of the season, in which he slapped a female contestant, Shambhavi, across the face. The task caused controversy, with Ashutosh receiving flak for going through with it. In a new interview, he said that he didn’t regret it then, hasn’t regretted it since, and won’t ever regret it in the future. He said that the task wasn’t designed by him, and accused the show’s host, Rannvijay Singha, and producer Raghu Ram of inciting him prior to it.
Appearing on Siddharth Kannan’s show, he said, “I don’t regret it, I never will. I sent a boy from my team to be slapped, my opponent sent a girl, thinking he’ll win. But when you’re in the battlefield, everybody’s equal. Maine ghuma ke diya thappad (I slapped her hard). Raghu got really angry, but I want to ask him, ‘Who came up with the task?’ He pretends to be a feminist, but he’s the one who came up with this idea. They even edited out what Rannvijay had said. He said that they would measure the sound of the slap, and that it should be heard all the way till the Petronas Towers. After I slapped her, I asked him, ‘Was it loud enough for you?'”
Ashutosh said that he even agreed to get slapped in return, although he didn’t have to. The fault, he said, was of the producers who came up with the task, and of his opponent, who sent a woman to be slapped by him. He said that he didn’t feel any backlash from the public; in fact, most people told him that he’d done the right thing. Questioning Shambhavi’s character, he said that she would flirt with male contestants in order to get ahead in the show, and that he wanted her to stop calling him her brother because of this. He said that there were no hard feelings between him and Shambhavi after the task, and that they would probably greet each other warmly if they crossed paths today.
Previously, Raghu addressed the controversy around the slap, and admitted that the task wasn’t well thought out. He told Rediff.com, “It was a mistake. In the finale, there were two boys left, and we brought back the rest of the Roadies for the last bit. And the point was for each of the boys to convince his teammates to do tasks that would make him win… Our guess was that people would not come forward to do the task, because there was enough animosity between them… But we were surprised when people started falling over themselves to do the tasks.”
