Amaal Mallik spoke about his family going through hunger and poverty

Sharing his family’s history with Gangs of Wasseypur writer Zeishan Quadri, Amaal revealed, “I want to make a film on my family. My family history is 70 years old. My grandfather became a composer in 1951. The story starts with a 14-year-old Sardar Malik. My grandfather asked his mom to admit him to art school so that he can learn singing, dancing. That is the school where Ravi Shankar, Allauddin Khan and Guru Dutt met and became friends and also Sardar Malik. And how he reaches stardom at that point in his life, but a misunderstanding is created and he gets banned.”

Amaal dropped some big names during the conversation, but they were beeped on-air. He revealed how people close to influential personalities instigated them against his grandfather, which derailed his career. He said, “Because of this one person, our house saw famine, there was no food left. That person declared that whoever will give work to Sardar Malik, I will not step in that studio. He misused his power so much.”

He further added, “The condition was so bad that my grandmother once threw harmonium from the balcony. ‘There is no roti in my house because of this one thing. Study BCom,’ she would tell my father and his brother Anu Malik.”

My family shifted to a chawl from society: Amaal

Amaal on his father lying about getting work

The singer-composer spoke about how his father would lie about finding work to him and his brother Armaan Malik. “All I did in my life, I did it for my father. I wanted to see him as a winner. They weren’t losers. They were best losers. My father used to lie that he has signed this and that, but nothing happened. When I was 15 years old, I started reading his eyes and I understood that he has been lying. Armaan never understood that, he was just 9 years old.”

Amaal on tense equation with Anu Malik

Speaking about his not-so-great relationship with uncle and music composer Anu Malik, Amaal said, “Even after 60 years, Anu Malik has that passion, so much that he will even compete with me. I like that fire, he didn’t give up. I don’t share a good relationship with him anymore, but his body of work is great. I try to do for my father what Anu Malik did for his.”

He also added, “My father was too naive for this industry. My father‘s brother and others hampered his career.”

Amaal on his viral Instagram post

Amaal clarified the controversial Instagram post in which he had declared that he was breaking ties with his family. He explained that he was facing an identity crisis at the time. “I was making songs, but nobody paid attention to me. I never had competitive feelings from Armaan, and he never made me feel that he’s a bigger star. But once, I had a fight with my mother, and after that I put up that post.” He further shared that he was also going through personal struggles — his dog had passed away, and he had experienced a painful breakup — which affected his mindset and made him vent on social media.
