Actor Rituraj Singh dies of cardiac arrest at 59

Actor Rituraj Singh, best known for his appearances in television shows, has died at the age of 59.

POPULAR television actor Rituraj Singh, 59, succumbed to a cardiac arrest on late Monday night. Known for his appearances in a number popular TV shows such as ‘Anupamaa’, ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’, ‘Kutumb’, ‘Hitler Didi’, ‘Diya Aur Baati Hum’, and ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’, Rituraj also acted in several movies such as ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ as well as web-series ‘Criminal Justice’, ‘The Test Case’, ‘Bandish Bandits’ and just-released ‘Indian Police Force’. He was born in Rajasthan’s Kota on May 23, 1964.

Speaking about his demise, actor Amit Behl said: “He was hospitalised 15 days back due to some pancreatic issues. He was back home a few days back. Yesterday, he felt really weak and was rushed to hospital but he suffered cardiac arrest on the way.” He is survived by wife Charu Singh, a son and a daughter. His funeral will take place at 10:30 am at Mumbai’s Oshiwara Hindu Cemetery on Wednesday.

Actor Sandip Sikand, who worked with Singh in ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii’, said: “More than an actor, he was one of the finest human beings that I know. I’m really saddened by the news.”

In a social media post, actor Nakuul Mehta wrote: “His electric presence, frenetic energy and full-bodied acting chops always had me in awe. I got a chance to play his on screen son on two seasons of ‘Never Kiss Your Best Friend’, and therein I had my moment with my TV hero…He gave me great joy as an audience and then he gave me some more whilst sharing a set with him.” Rituraj’s first major break on television was as the host of ‘Tol Mol Ke Bol’ (1993) and ‘Banegi Apni Baat’ (1993-1997).

Rituraj, who was a student at Barry John’s Theatre Action Group where Shah Rukh Khan was his classmate, was a well-known name in the amateur theatre in Delhi before he shifted to Mumbai. Even though television kept him busy in Mumbai, he was part of Rage Production’s long-running play, ‘Class of ’84’.
