Days after a crew member died on the sets of the popular TV show Anupamaa, cine organisations have written to Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde to intervene. Camera attendant Vineet Kumar Mandal, 32, was electrocuted on the sets of the TV show on November 14. AICWA (All India Cine Workers Association) has strongly reacted to this tragedy on the sets of Rupali Ganguly‘s show and its president Suresh Gupta has written a letter to Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde demanding that an FIR be registered against the makers and channel, and the show’s shooting suspended.

In the letter, the organisation alleged that the death was caused by negligence and disregard for safety protocol, “This has been caused by the reckless negligence and greed of the producers and the channel. The worker’s death occurred due to electrocution caused by faulty equipment on the set.” The letter further stated, “The production house resumed shooting blatantly ignoring the gravity of the situation. The hazardous conditions on sets, perpetuated by the use of old, damaged, and poorly insulated electric wires patched with plastic tape, created a death trap for workers. This systemic disregard for basic safety protocols has led to yet another preventable loss of life.”

AICWA has demanded that an FIR should be registered for murder under Section 302 of IPC against the producers of Anupamaa, the channel, and the managing director of Film City. It also demands a compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given to the victim’s family. They demanded that all shooting activities should be suspended till a thorough investigation is carried out and safety protocols should be enforced.

Earlier, talking to SCREEN, Suresh Gupta had said, “Wires are exposed which becomes fatal, but these people see the crew workers as pests. A worker lost his life due to electrocution on the set, despite this tragic incident, the shooting was not halted and continued relentlessly until midnight at Film City. Shockingly, the shooting resumed the very next day, showing a blatant disregard for the loss of life.”

The producer, channel, or even actors have not yet commented on the incident, nor any official statement has been released.
