Actor Adil Hussain, who has worked in several international projects, opened up about working on Star Trek: Discovery. The actor said that while he wasn’t paid much for his guest appearance on the science-fiction series, he earns thousands of dollars in ‘residuals’, which means that every time the network earns money from the programme, he gets a 1% cut. Adil also spoke about his memorable first day on set, when the cast and crew gave him a special welcome and made him feel special.

Appearing on Cyrus Broacha’s Cyrus Says podcast, the actor said, “I auditioned, I got the part, and I was called in. Of course, I had done a big Hollywood film called Life of Pi, but that was long ago. I went there, to the Pinewood Studios in Toronto, and the sets were huge. I was asked to come in 10 days before shoot, and for 10 days, the only thing they did was take my measurements for my costume.”

He continued, “It was a three-episode guest appearance. They paid me little money, but the good thing is that I keep getting residuals every two months. If they are earning money, I earn money, 1%. So every three or four months, I get $5000 or $6000 (around Rs 5 lakh). Crazy, no?”

Recalling his first day on set, Adil Hussain said, “I reach set, get my makeup done, and they escorted me to the shooting floor. I see all the heads of department, and my three co-stars, including the main actor Sonequa Martin-Green, all standing in a circle waiting for me. Can you believe it? I’m just a nobody from India. In comparison to what happens in our country, you’re a guest actor somewhere from Assam…”

But contrary to how he is treated in his own country, Adil said that the cast and crew welcomed him warmly, and the director introduced him to everybody. Adil even made a little speech, “I was born in a town where newspapers used to come three days after they were published, and today, I am crossing the galaxy, so thank you.” The lead star hugged Adil, and whispered in his ear how excited she was to work with him. “All the hierarchies and boundaries disappeared. You’re meeting someone on the human level,” he said.
