When a ‘guilty’ Suriya believed he wasn’t a great father: ‘Jyotika created a beautiful home… played the dad to my young kids’

In an old interview, Suriya said unlike Jyotika, who juggled multiple roles with ease, he couldn't do the same in his home.

If you look at the recent interviews of Jyotika, who was part of the Netflix series, Dabba Cartel, it is clear that she adores Suriya, and respects his body of work. Suriya shares the same sentiment, as evident from an an old interview he gave to Vanitha TV right around the time Jyotika made her much-awaited big screen comeback in 2015 after their marriage in 2006.

“Jyotika was a wonderful homemaker, and she also took on the father’s responsibility in the family,” said Suriya, who opened up about how they had a discussion about her restarting her career. “We thought it was time. She took on the responsibility of creating a beautiful home, and it’s at that time the Malayalam film, How Old Are You? came our way, and we thought it would be a wonderful comeback for Jyotika.”

But Suriya candidly admitted that the film, which was made in Tamil as 36 Vayadhiniley, was an eye-opener on so many fronts. “Both men and women can feel inspired by the film. It is about respecting women and I believe even married couples don’t speak from their heart in their own homes. We take things for granted,” said Suriya, adding, “We don’t completely value what the women do at home. It is not about them losing their wings, but not even seeing the sky.”

Taking some blame on himself, Suriya pointed out that he was happy to produce the film because Jyotika was always a source of tremendous inspiration and support. “In fact, I was also feeling guilty for some time. Somewhere, men are responsible for women not doing what they want, or chasing the dreams. Then there was a realisation,” said the Kanguva actor, who reiterated that Jyotika was a good mom, and a good wife, who understood what it meant to be holding the family together.

But his honesty sparkled the most when he said unlike Jyotika, who juggled multiple roles with ease, he couldn’t do the same in his home. “I know I am a decent husband, but I am not sure if I’m a great father, and as always, Jyotika stepped into fill that void too, and played the dad part to my young kids.”

Notably, Suriya has been playing catch up on the lost years, as he moved to Mumbai with Jyotika and his kids to ensure he spent more time with his teenaged children, and develop the space for Jyotika to chase her Bollywood dreams.
