Vignesh Shivan on being dropped from Ajith’s AK 62: ‘Producer wasn’t satisfied with second half of the script’
Ajith Kumar was supposed to team up with director Vignesh Shivan for AK62, but the director backed out of the project due to creative differences.

Director Vignesh Shivan was on cloud nine a few weeks ago as he was all geared up to direct Ajith Kumar in the star’s upcoming film, which is tentatively called AK62. However, later it was confirmed that Vignesh Shivan has backed out of the project, and director Magizh Thirumeni of Thadam fame will be directing the film. In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Vignesh Shivan finally opened up about the reason behind the lost opportunity.
The director said that the producer of the film needed him to alter things in the second half of the script, which didn’t sit well with him. “One has to handle everything. It is a disappointment indeed. The hurdle was that my producer wasn’t satisfied with the second half of my script. But that is what my story is about, and I cannot change it. With Ajith sir, things were all fine, but from the producer’s side, they demanded that some things could be different in the script. However, I couldn’t do it,” Vignesh Shivan said.
The young director says one should look at everything optimistically and that he is happy for Magizh Thirumeni, who is set to direct Ajith. “Whoever is going to direct the film… Magizh Thirumeni sir is a good director. He will be good. I think that you can’t predict whether things are happening too soon or too late for you. I might have gotten this film a bit soon. Sometimes we tend to jump the queue, and might get dragged back and be told ‘More people already waiting for it, so wait’. Here, only when a person loses an opportunity, another gets it. It’s like that. As I lost this opportunity, a super solid director like Magizh Thirumeni is getting to direct a star like Ajith. I would see it as a very good thing.”
Vignesh also hopes that he will get to direct Ajith in the future, but even then it will be for a script that he has envisioned. “It is not denied, it might be delayed. My first film didn’t as per my plans. Now, I am doing another film, which is close to my heart. I am in a happy space. However, imagine when I get an opportunity like Naanum Rowdy Thaan, and the hero asks me to change things and I succumb to the demands. If the film doesn’t work, then that’s a bigger failure. At the end of the day, it’s my story that saves me,” he said.
