Viduthalai Part 2 box office collection day 3: Vetrimaaran-Vijay Sethupathi film enters top 10 opening grossers list
Viduthalai Part 2 box office collection day 3: The film managed to hold on to its fort by earning Rs 7.7 crore on Saturday and Rs 7.6 crore on Sunday to take the opening weekend tally to Rs 22.80 crore

Viduthalai Part 2 box office collection day 3: In more ways than one, Viduthalai 2 is Vetrimaaran’s most political film, and his third straight A-rated film. Considering the propensity of violence in his films, it is still impressive how people come in droves to watch a movie that has brand Vetrimaaran stamped all over. That is why it comes as no surprise that Viduthalai 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 2023 film, opened to a decent Rs 7.5 crore on Friday. However, the film received mixed reviews on social media, with polarising reactions becoming the norm for the Vijay Sethupathi starrer. Still, the film managed to hold on to its fort by earning Rs 7.7 crore on Saturday and Rs 7.6 crore on Sunday to take the opening weekend tally to Rs 22.80 crore.
This is testament to the success of both Vetrimaaran and Viduthalai Part 1. Incidentally, the first part made Rs 20.65 crore in the first week of its release. Viduthalai Part 2 has surpassed that number within three days of its run. This number has also helped the film zoom into the Top 10 list of Tamil films with the best opening weekend numbers. Viduthalai 2 joins the list, which includes films like GOAT, Vettaiyan, Amaran, Indian 2, Raayan, Kanguva, Pushpa 2, Thangalaan, and Captain Miller.
Incidentally, this is also the best opening for a Vijay Sethupathi film this year as his Maharaja made Rs 22.28 crore (including Rs 5.15 crore for the Telugu version).
As always, it is the first Monday that would determine the trends of the Viduthalai 2 collections over the week. The Christmas holidays might act as a much-needed shot-in-the-arm for the makers. But interestingly, Maharaja, which might have had a slightly lower opening than Viduthalai 2 went on to beat the collections of films like Indian 2 and Ayalaan because of its consistency over the week. It will be interesting to see if Viduthalai 2 follows suit, and becomes a memorable year for Vijay Sethupathi, whose 2024 started with the Hindi-Tamil bilingual, Merry Christmas, directed by Sriram Raghavan. It will also be an important year for Soori, whose Garudan is presently in the list of top 10 Tamil grossers of 2024. It would be bittersweet if Viduthalai 2 edges out Garudan from this list at the end of its run. But for now, all eyes are on the Monday numbers of the film, which has cinematography by Velraj, and music by Ilaiyaraaja.
With both parts of Viduthalai finally complete and out in the theatres, it is expected that Vetrimaaran will finally get started on his much-hyped Suriya-starer, Vaadivaasal. With Suriya having wrapped up the Karthik Subbaraj film, and currently working on a RJ Balaji project, the actor might get on with Vaadivaasal after the completion of Suriya 44 and Suriya 45.
