Thug Life Movie: Release date, advance booking, box office collection prediction, other details
Thug Life Movie release date, advance booking, box office collection prediction: Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s gangster drama mints Rs 34.7 crore in advance sales.

Thug Life Movie Release Date: Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Thug Life is all set to hit theatres, and fans can’t wait for the actor-director’s reunion after 38 years. The last film they worked on together was the 1987 classic Nayakan. However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing for Haasan’s film, as it recently landed in trouble following the actor’s “Kannada was born out of Tamil” remark, resulting in backlash from politicians. Before the film hits the big screen, here’s a look at everything we know about the gangster drama that releases on June 5.
Thug Life Movie Release Date
Thug Life will release in theatres on Thursday (June 5). It is set to hit cinemas in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. It’s also worth noting that the film’s OTT release has already been announced. The film will stream on Netflix after its theatrical run. The streaming giant shared the update on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “The Vinveli Naayagan returns—with a bang! Thug Life will arrive on Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi after its theatrical release!”

Thug Life is jointly produced by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam. According to reports, the film’s estimated budget is around Rs 250–300 crore. The reports also suggest that after Haasan’s cut from the film’s profits, Silambarasan TR (STR), who plays a pivotal role in the Mani Ratnam directorial, is receiving the biggest pay cheque of Rs 40 crore. Apart from him, Trisha Krishnan, who will be seen as Kamal’s love interest in the film, has reportedly earned Rs 12 crore for her role. Subsequently, other actors have also been paid well — actor Abhirami has been paid Rs 50 lakh, and Joju George has earned Rs 1 crore from the film.
Thug Life Movie Advance Booking Report
Since Thug Life reunites two legends — Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam — the film is expected to be a blockbuster. According to Sacnilk, the film’s advance booking in India stands at Rs 3.29 crore. Out of this, the native Tamil version scores the biggest chunk at Rs 2.89 crore, followed by Telugu (Rs 26 lakh) and Hindi (Rs 14 lakh). The numbers are much lower than what his last release, Indian 2 commanded.
Thug Life Movie Day 1 Box Office Collection Prediction
According to reports, Thug Life is expected to have a bumper opening at the box office despite releasing on a non-holiday weekday. The film is projected to mint Rs 35 crore on Day 1 and is likely to surpass the opening collections of recent Hindi releases like Sikandar and Chhaava, which earned Rs 30.06 crore and Rs 33.10 crore, respectively.
Advance ticket sales for Thug Life’s US premiere is also tracking lower than Indian 2. While Thug Life has made US $454,000 across 375 locations, covering over 1000 shows, Indian 2 made $580,431 after selling 28,000 tickets.
Thug Life Court Case
Kamal Haasan landed himself in hot water after he made the remark — “Kannada was born out of Tamil” — during Thug Life’s audio launch in Karnataka. His statement received massive backlash from pro-Kannada groups, including the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and local politicians. Following the outrage, Karnataka’s Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi, wrote to the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce (KFCC), urging them to ban all films featuring Kamal Haasan in the state unless he issued a public apology. Haasan, however, refused to apologise, resulting in the KFCC banning his film. The actor-filmmaker’s production company, Raaj Kamal Films, then filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court against the KFCC’s ban. The High Court, however, rebuked Haasan for not issuing an apology.
Thug Life To Not Release in Karnataka
Senior Advocate Dhyan Chinappa, representing Raaj Kamal Films, stated in court that Thug Life will not release in theatres in Karnataka until Kamal Haasan has a dialogue with the KFCC regarding his statement. “One way is to say I apologise… another is to explain the circumstances in which the statement is made, and also to express his affection for people and the language of Karnataka,” he said.
