Suhasini on dealing with caste issue in Indra: ‘I am a bit ashamed of Indra… Pa Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj’s films are more real’
At a recent event, Suhasini Maniratnam talked about her 1995 directorial Indra, which dealth with the subject of caste discrimination.

Suhasini Maniratnam recently said that she tried to glamourise the subject of caste discrimination in her 1995 film Indra. The movie revolves around two rival communities in a Southern village.
At ABP Southern Rising Summit, the actor-director was asked about Indra being one of the first movies to deal with caste issues. Suhasini said, “I am not very fond of the way I made that film.”
She added, “To look at the way… how Pa Ranjith did that film and Mari Selvaraj’s… you know they have been through it. They have been in the Gaza Strip. So, they know what happened to them. They went through the problems. Their films are more real than what I tried to do. I tried to glamourise it because I always was watching it from outside.
“I was not involved in the humiliation or the punishment that went on. Even though I am from a small village. So, that’s what was different. Today, these youngsters are succeeding with those concepts and interpretations. Whereas I try to glamourise it. I am a bit ashamed of the way I dealt with the film, at that time.”
Suhasini was last seen as an actor in the Telugu film Mr Pregnant. She last helmed a segment titled Coffee, Anyone in Amazon Prime’s Putham Pudhu Kaalai.
