Sathyaraj, who will next be seen in Weapon, recently spoke about how stardom has impacted the versatility of movie stars. In a candid conversation with OTTPlay, Sathyaraj pointed out how the commercial success of actors like Prabhas and Vijay has inadvertently restricted them to a narrower range of roles.

Sathyaraj observed that versatility was once a defining and empowering characteristic for actors. He claimed that this quality is becoming increasingly rare among today’s stars. “I think that is because the market and business of a few heroes have grown. So, when the projects they take on also get bigger, the films have to be dubbed so that audiences across the world can see them. It becomes a mandate, which restricts them from indulging in a variety of roles.”

He noted Prabhas and Vijay as examples of the trend. Sathyaraj, who has worked with both stars, said, “Vijay has done films like Love Today, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. They were so successful, too. But now that he is a big star and business has grown around him, he cannot come back to doing such films. Prabhas is another example where he has done a lot of romance films, but after Baahubali, you can only see him in larger-than-life roles. Today’s cinema has become such.”

Currently, Sathyaraj is busy promoting his upcoming film Weapon, which has him playing a superhuman. The film also has actor Vasanth Ravi of Rocky fame. Meanwhile, Sathyaraj is confirmed to be part of Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. He is also rumoured to be part of AR Murugadoss’s film with Salman Khan, titled Sikander.
