Retro Box Office Collection Day 2: After a formidable start to its theatrical run, the Suriya-led Retro hit its first hurdle immediately. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film only managed to earn Rs 7.5 crore in India nett on its second day of release. It opened on May 1 with a collection of Rs 19.25 crore but failed to keep the momentum going the next day. Suriya knows these streets all too well, as a similar trend was witnessed during the release of his last film, Kanguva.
Similar to this film, Kanguva opened with an impressive collection of Rs 24 crore. But as the second day ended, the film only managed Rs 9.5 crore, which was a massive 60% drop in audiences. As if almost made out of the same stencil, Retro saw a 61% drop in collections on its second day. During its theatrical run, Kanguva managed a total India nett collection of Rs 70 crore.
The second day of Retro also witnessed much poorer occupancy rates than day one. The average occupancy was 40.23%, with the morning and afternoon shows managing only 23% and 42%. While the evening and night shows didn’t do worse, they didn’t soar either, with the occupancy rates at 41% and 53%, respectively.

The action film has been directed by Karthik Subbaraj, who has been hailed by Suriya as the ‘man who can bend genres’. During the press tour for the movie, Suriya complimented his director and his style of surprising and challenging the actors on set. “You get the script, and you know the scene is going to start this way; suddenly he will surprise you with whose perspective the scene is starting from and where he is going to put the camera. He will be like this (pointing to Subbaraj sitting peacefully), and then suddenly he will surprise you and challenge you and ask, ‘Will you be able to do this?’ and you have to be ready,” he said.
Apart from Suriya, the film also features stars like Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Prashanth and Sujith Shanker. The cast and crew of the film will want to bounce back from the dismal Friday performance and hope to make up for the lost numbers during the weekend.
