Enough controversy has already erupted over Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan's wedding documentary, which was released on Netflix a full two years after they actually tied the knot. By the time the film was released, Nayanthara and Vignesh had become parents to twin sons. The film's release was delayed, Nayanthara alleged, because her former co-star Dhanush denied her the permission to use a clip from the film she met Vignesh on. She wrote a scathing open letter slamming the actor-filmmaker, whose latest movie, Idly Kadai, is playing in theatres. In a new interview, The Wedding Filmer, Vishal Punjabi, recalled working on Nayanthara and Vignesh's wedding video, and acknowledged the discomfort that he felt about having another film crew present. He said that he was offered the chance to direct the Netflix documentary as well, but passed because he didn't have the time. The couple hired another production team to shoot the film, and Vishal found himself jostling for space. In fact, they wanted me to direct the whole documentary, but time wouldn't permit because it was in the middle of wedding season. So they had another production house there. But Nayanthara really trusted our vision for the wedding video so she wanted us to film it. It was a little bit of a battle because you're filming with other people as well, so it's not the most comfortable. It's more important for us to have a really clean canvas when we're filming these weddings. But we managed, and we did a good job." Vishal also said that he had to comply with Netflix's specifications, because footage he shot would be used in the documentary. Prior to her documentary's release, Nayanthara blasted 'vengeful' Dhanush in an open letter, accusing her of harbouring a personal grudge against her and Vignesh. Dhanush sued Nayanthara for alleged misuse of his intellectual property, and she wrote, "It is understandable if it is business compulsions and monetary issues that mandate your denial; but it hurts that this decision of yours is only to vent out your personal grudge against us and that you have deliberately remained indecisive this long."
