Nayanthara recalls people telling her mother, ‘Get her married, she is finished’: ‘I would lock myself in a room, cry all day’

Nayanthara, who is known as the Lady Superstar, had quiet a controversial journey while working her way up in the industry. In her Netflix documentary Nayantahara beyond the Fairytale, the actress has spoken about the dark days when she would cry all day.

Nayanthara made her debut in 2003 with the Malayalam film Manassinakkare. The film, which was supposed to be the comeback of veteran actress Sheela, opened doors for Nayanthara’s career in the industry. She starred in several films post that in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. As she rose to fame, rumours around her personal and professional life began to do the rounds. Most of these rumours affected the actress and her parents. In her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, the actress opened up about those days and recalled crying all day in her room.

She said, “In the papers, there would be a piece of news about me, and I wouldn’t even be aware of what happened. Most of the time, that’s the case. And every day, for my mom and my dad to see that and to go through that whole thing was extremely difficult. And I would sit and cry the whole day. I wouldn’t eat anything. I would just lock myself in my room and cry. All this was very difficult for my mom to take it.”

While rumours became a part of her daily life after achieving success, there also came a time when the actress decided to quit acting in 2011. By this time, she had received severe backlash for playing the role of Sita, she was even fat-shamed and was linked to several personalities in the industry. Times were tough, she left acting after her then partner (Prabhu Deva) left her with no option. At this time, people claimed the actress was finished and bombarded her mother with parental advise.

The Jawan star said, “There were so many people who would call my mom and say that, ‘You should do something about your daughter. You should get her married. You should figure out her life because it’s all done. She is finished. Some would say, ‘Take care of her properly, make sure she doesn’t get into trouble.'”

She added, “It’s okay to make mistakes and to have that regret in your life that, ‘At this point, if I had not believed this person, I would have saved a few years in my life.’ But I feel that’s okay. There are only two options. Either your lose it, and completely destroy your life and cry about it. Or, just get up and make sure the people who treated you badly feel miserable about themselves, looking at your success.”

In 2012, Nayanthara made a powerful comeback with Krish’s Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. It also starred Rana Daggubati in the lead role. The film was critically acclaimed and was declared a blockbuster at the box office. In 2014, she came in touch with Vignesh Shivan, the director and writer of her film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. After falling in love during the shooting of the film, the couple dated for about 8 years before tying the knot in 2022.

Around 2006, the actress was said to be dating Silambarasan after starring in his debut film Vallavan. However, their relationship didn’t last long. In 2008, the actress starred in Prabhu Deva’s film Villu and the two were set to tie the knot in 2009. However, as Prabhu Deva was still married to his wife Latha, their relationship created quite a controversy with the couple calling it quits on an ugly note, forcing the actress to taking a sabbatical from films.
