After captivating movie enthusiasts with his mesmerising work in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan franchise, cinematographer Ravi Varman is poised to make a comeback to the Tamil film industry with Raju Murugan’s heist action comedy Japan.

Acknowledging his significant role in bringing Ravi Varman on board the project, actor Karthi, in an interview organised by Japan’s production company Dream Warrior Pictures, shared: “During our time working on PS, we had many conversations. He shared with Jayam Ravi and me how his childhood in Thanjavur unfolded, how he arrived in Madras after losing both his parents, and how he achieved success despite not knowing English. He emphasised that none of this mattered and that we could learn whatever we set our minds to.”

“Someone like that eventually made it to Bollywood and collaborated with nearly all the prominent directors. His works are highly influential, and he is currently involved in international film projects.”

“To achieve further growth, we should change the way we present our stories. With this in mind, I reached out to Ravi Varman and informed him about my work on a film titled Japan, which is a departure from anything I’ve done before. I asked him to listen to the story just once. He agreed and came to hear the narration,” Karthi added.

Recalling that he had only limited free dates available due to his simultaneous involvement in S Shankar’s Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian 2, Karthi shared that Ravi agreed to work on the project.

“He mentioned he could allocate us only 10 days per month, as the remaining 20 were committed to Team Indian 2. Upon hearing this, I informed Raju Murugan that I was willing to accommodate this schedule and asked if he was fine with it. Once Murugan agreed, we brought Ravi on board.”

“During that period, he didn’t take a single day of rest. After a continuous 20-day stint on Indian 2, he would join our sets for the next 10 days before resuming work on the former project. Despite the rigorous schedule, he remained energetic and focused on enhancing the quality of each scene,” Karthi added.

Meanwhile, Raju Murugan remarked that although Ravi Varman is perceived by those in the industry as a serious person, the director noted that he enjoys humour and had a great time on the sets of Japan. “He personally shared with me that he had never laughed as much on a set as he did while working on Japan,” Murugan recalled. He also emphasised that Ravi Varman played a pivotal role in providing Japan with an international look.
