Jyotika says Suriya’s Kanguva getting harsher reviews than other ‘pathetic’ movies irked her: ‘Maybe some parts weren’t good, but…’
Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 300–350 crore, director Siva's Suriya-starrer Kanguva grossed just Rs 106.25 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest disasters in Tamil cinema in recent times.
While Kanguva was being widely panned during its theatrical run, Suriya’s wife, renowned actor Jyothika, stepped forward in its defence. (Credit: Instagram/@actorsuriya, @jyotika)Despite arriving amid significant anticipation — largely fuelled by the movie’s expansive and expensive promotional efforts — director Siva’s epic fantasy actioner Kanguva (2024), starring Suriya, Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in the lead roles, received overwhelmingly poor reviews from all quarters and eventually crashed at the box office. Mounted on a reported budget of Rs 300–350 crore, the film grossed just Rs 106.25 crore worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, making it one of the biggest disasters in Tamil cinema in recent times.
While the film’s colossal failure affected everyone involved, it was particularly devastating for Suriya, as he and his fans had high hopes for Kanguva, expecting that it would become the box office blockbuster he had been lacking for years, with the only exception being Pandiraj’s Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022). But the movie eventually failed them. Nonetheless, even as Kanguva was being widely panned during its theatrical run, Suriya’s wife, renowned actor Jyotika, stepped forward in its defence, sharing her two cents on the movie in a lengthy social media post.
Recently, Jyotika elaborated on her decision to make that move supporting Suriya in public while the film was struggling. Pointing out that she has seen far worse movies — particularly in the South — enjoying both critical and commercial success, the Dabba Cartel star opined that Kanguva, despite its flaws, was a unique attempt. “I just have a problem with bad films. I have seen an immense number of commercial bad films down South that have done really well (box office-wise) and have been reviewed large-heartedly,” she shared during a recent appearance on The Puja Talwar Show.
“When it came to my husband’s film, I felt it was reviewed quite harshly. Maybe there were portions that weren’t good; but overall, a lot of effort was put into it. It was one of a kind. So, when I saw harsher reviews for Kanguva than for some pathetic ones, that got to me. I was more upset with the media for not being fair,” Jyotika added.

In a social media post from November 2024, Jyotika had called the Siva directorial a “spectacle in cinema” while expressing pride in Suriya’s decision to take on the project. Criticising the negative reviews, she wrote, “I’m surprised with the negative reviews from media and certain fraternities as it’s not done by them to this high level for the most unintellectual big-budget films I have seen earlier with age-old stories where women are stalked, double meaning dialogues are spoken, and have the most over-the-top action sequences.”
However, Jyotika’s note wasn’t entirely uncritical. She acknowledged, “Definitely the first half hour doesn’t work and the sound is jarring.” Still, she downplayed these shortcomings, arguing that such issues were natural in films of this scale and experimental nature.
