Dhanush ‘would cry in mother’s lap’ when dad Kasthuri Raja pushed him to become an actor: ‘He would beg me to let him go’
Dhanush's father Kasthuri Raja shared anecdotes from the actor's debut film and recalled that it was a disheartening experience for the actor.
Dhanush made his debut in the movies with the 2002 film Thulluvadho Ilamai. (Photo: Express Archives)Dhanush recently returned to direction with his latest venture Idli Kadai and the film managed to hold its own despite tough competition from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1. Dhanush’s father, filmmaker Kasthuri Raja, recently spoke about the origin of the film’s story, as he also discussed how Dhanush’s debut film, Thulluvado Ilamai, wasn’t an ideal experience for the actor.
In a chat with YouTube channel Behindwoods, Kasthuri Raja recalled that it was during Dhanush’s second year in college that the actor informed him that he wanted to abandon his studies and wanted to explore a life in the movies. However, Kasthuri Raja discouraged him from doing so and asked him to finish his degree, which he did. He then recalled Dhanush’s first experience as an actor, which turned out to be quite disheartening for the young actor, who was just 19 at the time. “Initially, when I asked him to play the lead in Thulluvado Ilamai, he said, ‘Dad, please leave me alone. I want to be a chef’. He had no interest in cinema at that point. But I somehow convinced him to step in as the hero. He used to cry and beg me to let him go. We used to wait on the set with the lighting and setups in place, waiting for Dhanush to come back from school after finishing exams to shoot the scenes,” he said.
Kasthuri Raja recalled that at one point, Dhanush would cry in his mother’s lap, after his brother Selvaraghavan took over the film. “Selva was a very strict filmmaker. He never bothered who was on set; everyone used to get an earful from Selva. Dhanush used to lie on his mother’s lap and cry, saying I don’t want this cinema. Brother (Selvaraghavan) is making mistakes, and he is getting mad and shouting at me. We used to somehow convince him to shoot scenes and get him ready,” he recalled.
In the same chat, Kasthuri Raja shared the story from Dhanush’s childhood, which inspired Idli Kadai. “Sankarapuram was like Hollywood to Dhanush and Selvaraghavan from a young age. When they visited their grandparents, there used to be a small idli kadai in the area. They loved those idlis. To eat the idlis, they would not ask the grandparents for money. In that neighborhood, there was this arrangement where kids would get money for picking flowers. They used to eat idlis that way from that shop. That is the origin of the story,” he said.
Idli Kadai tells the story of a son coming back to his native village to carry on his dead parents’ famous Idli Kadai with the support of the local villagers. As per trade tracker Sacnilk, Idli Kadai earned Rs 50 crore in India.
