Coolie box office collection worldwide Day 8: The Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie has nosedived within a week of release. The action-drama, directed by hotshot young director Lokesh Kanagaraj, has passed the Rs 200 crore mark domestically and the Rs 400 crore mark worldwide. But with collections dropping to single-digits already, the chances of it overtaking the ‘Superstar’s 2023 hit Jailer are becoming slim. Coolie made just Rs 6.2 crore on day eight of release across India, which is roughly a tenth of what the film made on its opening day.

Coolie debuted with Rs 65 crore on August 14, and proved to be as front-loaded as most of Rajinikanth’s films. In fact, this trend can be observed with most star-driven movies from the South, as massive armies of fans show up to watch their films on opening day. By the second or third day, poor word-of-mouth hits the streets, and collections begin spiralling. In the case of Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the response was warm. This pushed the film past the Rs 600 crore mark worldwide.

Lokesh himself has developed quite the strong following, with his shared universe of action-thrillers. His LCU franchise includes hits such as Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. Coolie is a standalone film, which may have disappointed the filmmaker’s fans who went in expecting Rajinikanth to join Vijay and Kamal Haasan under one umbrella. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Coolie’s total domestic collections now stand at around Rs 230 crore. The film is passing the Rs 450 crore mark worldwide today, and will most probably hit the Rs 500 crore mark over the weekend.

Coolie debuted alongside fellow pan-Indian entertainer War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. While fans of the ‘Man of the Masses’ showed up in strong numbers to support the film on opening day, their numbers have dwindled to the point of becoming negligible. War 2 made only around Rs 5 crore on its eighth day of release, and is trailing Coolie by around Rs 20 crore. Coolie was produced on a reported budget of more than Rs 300 crore. Rajinikanth will hope to bounce back with Jailer 2, his next film.
