AR Rahman embraces a slower pace of work: ‘You sometimes miss life when you work too much’
In a recent interview, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman shared his decision to embrace a slower pace of work in order to achieve a better work-life balance.

After working continuously for over three decades, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has finally decided to slow down. In a recent interview, Rahman shared his decision to embrace a slower pace of work in order to achieve a better work-life balance.
In an interview with IANS, AR Rahman revealed what prompted his decision to slow down at this stage of his career. The composer said, “Before, I was like a maniac, working day and night. You sometimes miss life when you work too much.”
He added, “I’ve reduced a lot so that I can enjoy life, learn things, spend time with family, and do work at the same time.”

AR Rahman used to have back-to-back releases in the early years of his career with little to no gap between his projects. Recalling the period, Rahman said, “Sometimes, you plan everything, and it cancels. Sometimes it’s beyond me. I go with the flow, like water. It takes the shape of the container. Even with work, it automatically gives. God had his way of giving me time.”
Rahman’s decision to slow down comes after he announced his separation from wife Saira Banu in November last year. The composer took to his X account to share a note which read, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
On the work front, AR Rahman last composed the soundtrack for Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life. He has projects like Ramayana: Part 1 alongside Hans Zimmer, Tere Ishk Mein, Peddi, Moon Walk, and Gandhi Talks, in the pipeline.
