Amaran director addresses caste controversy: ‘Parents said Major Mukund Varadarajan wanted to be identified as an Indian, and then a Tamilian’
A section alleged that the caste identity of Major Mukund was erased in Sivakarthikeyan-starrer Amaran.

While Sivakarthikeyan’s recent film, Amaran, which is based on the life of the late Major Mukund Varadarajan has been receiving both critical and commercial acclaim, it has also ruffled quite a few feathers. One such controversy that had been brewing over the past few days was the allegation that the caste identity of Mukund was erased in the film. Addressing this criticism, director Rajkumar Periasamy shared that such a move was done at the behest of the instructions of Mukund’s family.
Talking at the success meet of Amaran, Rajkumar said, “Right in the first meeting, his parents informed me that Mukund always wanted to be known as an Indian and a Tamilian. They wanted him to have just these two identities as a member of the Indian army.” The director also spoke about how the endearing way of Major Mukund’s father being referred to as ‘Naina’ and mother as ‘Sweety’ was also something that they shared in his interactions with them.
“As a director, it never occurred to me to mention Major Mukund’s caste. When we entered his house to talk to his parents about the film, neither did they ask our caste, nor did we. That’s how we have approached Amaran,” said Rajkumar, adding, “ Major Mukund Varadarajan is an Ashoka Chakra awardee. Amaran is a respectful gift to sacrifice and hard work.”
